Giving Tuesday is an annual “global day of giving” created to empower individuals, communities, and organizations to band together for philanthropic efforts. Created in 2012 as a simple idea for people to support and give back to worthy causes, it has now become a year-round global movement inspiring hundreds of millions to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
Each year, Turpentine Creek (TCWR) participates in this global movement to raise thousands of dollars to support the animals at the refuge and increase awareness of captive wild cats and bears. This year will be no different as TCWR aims to raise $120,000 to strengthen its’ preventative measures to protect TCWR wild cats from potential fatal tick-borne diseases like Bobcat Fever.
In September 2020, TCWR rescued Robbie, a five-year-old white tiger who had endured severe neglect alongside five other tigers at a roadside zoo in Oklahoma. Due to his inbred genetics, Robbie was slightly cross-eyed, but he thrived at TCWR after transitioning to a strict raw meat diet and gaining access to ample space to run and play. He enjoyed spending summer hours in his pool and enthusiastically played with his large boomer balls and blue barrel, often rolling them down the hill with boundless energy.
In late August 2024, Robbie stopped eating his regular diet, prompting TCWR Animal Care staff to follow established protocols for unusual behavior. Robbie was moved to TCWR’s veterinary hospital for further examination and lab tests. Despite the initial tests and imaging appearing normal, Robbie passed away unexpectedly through the night, leaving the entire team shocked
