Falling for Big Cats: Why autumn is one of the best times of year to visit TCWR

As the air begins to crisp and the leaves transform into a vibrant tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, there’s no better time to explore the natural beauty of the Ozark Mountains. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is nestled in this picturesque landscape, offering a unique blend of breathtaking scenery and a sanctuary for rescued cats. The Ozark Mountains are renowned for their stunning fall foliage, visible along the mountain roads to the Refuge and through different vistas on our property.

Fall is an incredibly active time for the animals since the weather is not too hot or cold. As a sanctuary, we do not design our enclosures to keep the animals on display. So, during the more extreme seasons, many animals will be in their dens, keeping warm, or hiding in the shade to cool off. They are likelier to be out, visible, and active in the fall. With the surplus of pumpkins for Halloween, the Refuge receives many enrichment donations from our local corporations and community, such as Walmart and Harps, that help keep the animals engaged. As winter approaches, TCWR bears will become more active as they prepare for their long winter sleep by foraging for the food we spread throughout their habitats.

As one of the best places in the country to view the leaves changing, Eureka Springs fall foliage is a sight to remember. There are many additional activities to enjoy in town during your visit to the Refuge. Explore our local businesses and restaurants on a stroll through Downtown Eureka Springs, find time for a spa day at the Crescent Hotel, visit Onyx Cave, or participate in many outdoor activities our Natural State offers.

Lodging at the Refuge includes various options: Family Suites, Glamping, Safari Lodges, a Tree House, and RV spots. All lodging reservations include entry tickets to the Refuge during their stay, so you’ll never miss a moment to visit your favorite animals. We look forward to seeing travelers and supporters this fall. Don’t forget to browse our special packages when you stay with us.
