At Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR), the stories of rescued big cats like so many who have called TCWR home, are more than just tales of survival—they are powerful reminders of the urgent need for change and the lasting impact that advocacy can create. Each rescued animal at the Refuge, whether it’s a tiger, lion, leopard, bobcat, African serval, etc. brings with it a legacy that continues to inspire advocacy, policy change, and a more humane world for exotic animals.
The Power of Their Stories
Take India, for example. Before she arrived at TCWR, this young tigress endured an uncertain and dangerous life under private ownership. She had her room in a house, and when released on a tie-out in a residential yard, she was closely supervised. Yet, despite these efforts, her needs were misunderstood, and as she grew, it became clear that this was not a safe or sustainable environment for a tiger. In a final act of desperation, her owner took her into the vast Buffalo National Forest, leaving her to fend for herself. And to his surprise, India made the incredible 60-mile journey back to his doorstep. The urgency to find a better solution for India had never been more critical.
When India was brought to the refuge in 2005, she became more than just a resident—her story sparked a broader conversation about the ethics of private ownership of big cats and the need for stricter regulations. India’s incredible journey, from abandonment to resilience, helped raise awareness of the issues facing exotic cats in captivity and led to significant changes in Arkansas laws.
Like India, every animal at TCWR has a story that echoes the larger need for change in how we treat and care for wild animals. These stories do more than just educate—they inspire action. They remind us that big cats, and all exotic animals, deserve a life free from exploitation and abuse. Through the legacy of these rescued animals, we have seen growing support for stronger wildcat protections and a greater understanding of the challenges these animals face.
The Vital Role of Donor Support
However, these stories of survival and hope are not possible without the support of generous donors who help make the refuge’s work possible. The continued care of animals like India, and other animals in need, relies heavily on the financial support from individuals who are passionate about protecting wildlife.
At TCWR, we don’t just care for wildcats and bear—we give them a voice. Through the support of our donors, we can continue providing a haven for rescued big and small cats, as well as bears, offering them spacious natural habitats, medical care, enrichment, and the opportunity to live out their lives with dignity. However, sustaining this mission requires the ongoing commitment of people who care deeply about the welfare of these animals and their future.
The Friends of India Membership Level
One of the most meaningful ways to honor the legacy of our animals and our ongoing mission, is to give back through memberships. Memberships, like the Friends of India, are not just a tribute to India’s story but a way for supporters to be directly involved in continuing her legacy. As a Friends of India member, you help provide the resources needed for animal care, advocacy efforts, and the refuge’s mission to end the exploitation of privately owned wildlife. Your membership ensures that more wildcats and bears can find the second chance they deserve.
The Friends of India membership level is a perfect example of how donor support fuels our work and ensures the ongoing care of our animals. Through this membership, you join a community that understands the importance of protecting big cats and ensuring their well-being. You become part of a movement that not only celebrates the life of one extraordinary tiger but also contributes to the survival of many others like her.
